Life According to Ping ...

April 30, 2003

Bumped into a friend who just broke up with her guy yesterday. 4 or is it 5 solid years of relationship.

Today, I bumped into her ex guy with a new girl. Got together 4 days after he broke up with her.

Anyone heard of Joel Peter Witkin? If you have the guts, go check out his works in google or yahoo search. There are some really disturbing pictures. Oh yah, you should read about the pictures after viewing them. But don't say I don't warn you. Parental Guidance might be required for some of us.

“Many years ago felt that I’d seen too much and that I didn’t want to see any more tragedies in this world. But unfortunately, the world continues, history continues to produce tragedies. And it is very important that they be documented in a humane way, in a compelling way. And because I’ve established credibility in the press…I feel the responsibility to continue. But believe me when I say that I would much rather these things never happen and I can either photograph something entirely different or not be a photographer at all. That’s not the way the world is. As far as I can see right now I am still healthy I understand the value in it and I think I still have a place. Having a place is a privilege and a responsibility that I cannot turn my back on. I have to continue.” -- James Nachtwey

STAY ALIVE
BEMANI

A bold indictment of the oppressive Iranian society, Bemani tells the story of three repressed women: one is forced to marry an old man; another is forced to quit medical school by her disapproving father; and the third, a rug maker, is persecuted by her brothers for allegedly having an affair with a soldier. But these women aren't going to be victimised by the harsh conditions without putting up a fight.

I was actually amused with the way the film is shot. Its funny when the film wants to put an idea across, a narrator would suddenly voice out some qns to give us a clearer picture of the storyline. Its really a simple flick.

Anyway, its really saddening to see women being so suppressed in other parts of the world. I won't say the flick s fantastic. In fact, by hollywood standards it sucks. But yet its just so funny la. I mean the cinematography is simple and the way they try to protray the idea. =D

Went over to suntec foodfest. *grinz* Hows festive.

WAR PHOTOGRAPHER

Photojournalist James Nachtwey has been traveling to war-torn countries for two decades to document the poverty, famine and suffering. This film combines interviews with photographs, and even a "photographer's-eye view" of the action-a video camera was fixed to the body of Nachtwey's still camera, bringing us into the frontline as well. From Nicaragua during the contra war, South Africa in the mid-1980's Kosovo, Indonesia and Rwanda, the film reflects on what kind of difference the photographs have made.

More like looking forward to this on tuesday.

Update on yesterday:

I was really bored with whatever soccer match that arsenal was playing yesterday! Bored@Father Flanagan's Irish Pub! I really belong to the era when eric cantona, david seaman were playing! An Exhuasted Me.

Went around looking for jobs yest. Of course we included shopping breaks and feasting on fish & co. till we wanna die breaks. Jobs are not fantastic. In fact, they are kinda routine and boring.

amazing
Hui & I went back to this agency which she got her blading job last year. The person in charge recognized huihui! Next thing she said, "you are lee ping right?" geez. I signed up with hui last year but ended up working at another firm & i only met her once in my life and she remembers MY NAME! *amazed*

Sometimes I really wonder what kinda job will i hold when i get out of varsity. I like events actually. Organizing. I never really lasted for like more than 3 months for most of my jobs. Especially admin. After 2 months i be so freaking bored that i need a change. Tho i have a track record of 4 months at starhub. I think its because i was in finance for 2 months odd. Got sick. managed to transfer to sales for a month odd. got sick again. then got back to finance. quite cool ah.

Someone commented to me that she cant imagine me behind a computer. I be the kind who works very hard for some projects. Followed by a well deserved break that will be backpacking ard the world or playing pool?!? (the pool part i dun understand also but thats what she said la) After that its back to work for ping.

I think every other one of us would be hoping for such a lifestyle. dreaming

me behind my computer

Oh anyways the blading fanatics are going ecp again today! lol

April 22, 2003

i tried to remember why it was over. differences? or did he said we quarrelled too much? or ijit throwin in the white towel so easily. can't remember. Not that it matters already.

went nite blading wif kaki cin n kaki rose. Poor cin became miss fall down today. (not me oradi!) thank god for my vainity in getting a new pair of guards thus cin was more protected courtesy of ping. =D
damn. din even felt like i worked out tho we bladed for like 6 odd to 11 odd? of course there are the pick myself up sessions, chit chat sessions, viking hotdogs sessions and trying to do the crab session ( tho i failed terribly) anyway the lack of workout feel is due to my big 80 mm wheels! =(( bigger circumference means faster means less effort means no fat burned! =(( the duo worked out a good sweat session tho unlike me.

more nite blading sessions ahead! oh n i wanna go ubin camping! rent some kampong huts at sentosa and stay over. club.

if you were to die tmr, what regrets would you have?

Dim Whispers of the Missing

By ALAN FEUER

AGHDAD, Iraq, April 16 — This crowd speaks in names and dates.

"Shahab Hassan, 1991," a despairing mother says.

"Hussein Naim, 1997," a sister cries.

In halting English, a brother shouts, "Hashem Mehdi, 1995."

For days now, scores of desperate Iraqis have turned up outside the state security complex here, searching for their missing loved ones, begging the American troops who guard its gates to help them find the relatives whom they believe to be trapped in a prison beneath the sprawling grounds.

With the fall of Saddam Hussein's government, 30 years of buried history is slowly being resurrected. The Iraqis who appear each morning calling out names and dates of arrest are hoping that their missing brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles will be resurrected along with the past.

They hold up one finger, two fingers, four fingers, trying to explain to the Americans how many relatives are supposedly in the jail. They throng the gates from dawn to dusk, holding up photos of their vanished loved ones and holding desperately onto hope.

They are hoping in vain, it seems. The marines say they have searched the complex from top to bottom and discovered nothing. There is no secret prison, they say.

"It's become an urban legend," said Sgt. Shane Parks, a weary marine who was guarding the gate this afternoon. "We've told them a hundred times there's no one here, go home. But they don't want to hear it. They come back every day."

The miseries of Baghdad are legion, but perhaps the most miserable is the heartbreaking optimism of those who believe that, with the government dismantled, their missing relatives will reappear.

The dead stay dead. The wounded stay in hospitals. But the memory of those Iraqis who have simply vanished — and there are thousands — stays stubbornly lodged in their family's hearts and minds.

"With the will of God, we will find him now," Mehdi Kadom, 25, said of his uncle, Saleh Mukhtar, who disappeared in 1982. Mr. Mukhtar was arrested for being a member of a Shiite opposition group.

"He's still alive," his nephew said. "I know it. I continue to carry hope."

Mr. Kadom's hope, like the hope of others, flourished when the First Marine Division captured the state security complex last week and commandeered it as its headquarters.

"Nobody came here before the Americans arrived," said Ali Salman, whose two cousins were beaten and arrested by the secret police — one in 1983, the other in 1985. "It was dangerous to even show your face here. Who would put their finger in that fire?"

This morning, however, perhaps 100 people stood outside the gates. The stories they told were eerily similar. Three men in a car came in the middle of the night to haul off someone's brother. Four men jumped from a car in broad daylight to snatch somebody's cousin from the street.

"Why won't they let us in?" asked Jamil Abid Ali as the armed marines looked on. The police took his brother away in 1991. "Everyone knows our families are in there. The soldiers know this, too, but they do nothing. The Americans, they are as bad as Saddam Hussein."

They say people have heard voices coming from underground, crying for help. When pressed, however, no one admits to having the heard the voices themselves.

Similar rumors percolate about the Americans. They have the blueprints to the prison but have not used them, the Iraqis say. They have already been in contact with the Yugoslav architect who designed it, but do nothing, the Iraqis say. They have sophisticated sensors but leave them sitting in warehouses, the Iraqis say.

Trying to dispel the rumors, an Iraqi man was invited inside the complex and given a complete tour as a representative of the family members. He said the American took him everywhere and there was nothing.

He said the families were simply desperate. The imagination is a savior when the truth is grim, and those haunting voices cannot be ignored.

"What they are hearing is the ghosts of the dead," he said.

Again!

Have you ever wondered what make a person the way he/she is? Upbringing? Background? Personality? Zodiac signs? Why am I the way I am?
I simply cant understand myself at times. Why do I behave differently towards different people? I was just listening to some silly recordings on his mp3 player. Damn ridiculous conversations we had. But yet now, these ridiculous conversations would never resurface between us again. I know how ridiculous I get at times. But. oki there is no but.

ok.i called thaiexpress today ( my sigg is left there) and asked nicely if they would rinse my bottle for me. why? bcos the last drink consumed is orange juice ah!

i wasted another good day. Damn. its wed. 4 more days to exams! *stress*

Yupz. Hui lost & found her wallet yest. Then at 1 am yest, I remembered I lost my sigg bottle!! =((

April 05, 2003

Oliver! Most of the scenes were similar to what I remember as a kid. Well, maybe not exactly. I remember Fagin being more evil. Oliver truly stealing stuff. But the story was there. I extremely liked the shortest boy in the group. He wears a stripped green 'sock'. Its just how he moves I guess. Sister likes Dodger better tho.

& Mr Teng flew back to SMU to mug!

I won't say Oliver! is a must watch. It's entertaining. Yupz & I enjoyed it.

Would really want to catch Chicago the musical man. Finally caught Chicago at Lido yest. The only screening at 7! Finally caught it wifout him. It seems ironic & sad that we kinda broke up due to the show Chicago. Kinda la.

Practically wasted my whole day yest. Supposed to blade but due to unforeseen circumstances, we were playing pool. Done with pool, then we realised it was raining! Brought my blades out to Orchard. Got my first aid card after like 5 mths? Caught in the rain again. It's like I'm suppose to be mugging! Geez!

My stupid epson printer repairs cost like 120 bucks. Should I get a new printer? But then again I have a LOT of ink. But New printer have a year warranty whereas a repaired one will only have 3 mths! =((
